Filming/Shooting Schedule

We are going to be filming all our scenes over a week from Monday 4th January 2010-Sunday 10th January 2010. We are going to film all of the days in class time and outside of class as well. This is our schedule for the week:

4th - scenes of the ravers on the road shouting "Get Milli Get Mad''.

5th - scenes of sheesha smokers relaxing and having fun.

6th - scenes of Ruky on the decks remixing the song.

7th - scenes of extra ravers and background dancers in the video.

8th - scenes of the local dancers in a location.

9th - biggest filming day in Manchester where all out of town dancers will appear.

10th - any extra scenes that are needed which could be later edited.

Due to some weather problems the shooting took place indoors mostly in a dance studio and there was one sheesha scene and we didnt have much time so he had to make do with what footage we had.

Costume Plans

In our bassline music video we will need to make sure the performers/dancers/ravers and people that take part are organised wearing the right clothing to promote our video. This is needed for a sense of familiarity and for the audience to immediately recognise that it is a bassline music video.

As we are expressing youth and fun in our video and brand image we do not need specific clothing as we are going to show the reality of youth and break the typical stereotypes. The characters are going to come dressed as they normally would on a day out to create realism.

However we are going for a BLACK and PURPLE theme of clothing. These are two strong colours which will attract and catch the viewers eye but more importantly it is the brand identity of our artist, Ruky. All his previous album's have been constructed of a black and purple colour theme and for consistency the ancillary tasks consisting of the album cover and magazine advert will be of black and purple also. This is easier for the audience to realise that it is a specific artist and is easier when filming to have everyone organised.

Props List

In our video we will need props that will create a verisimilitude to the audience. These will have to be of the typical conventions and mise en scene of the bassline genre in music to create reliability and familiarness. In our video we will be using and needing the following:

1) Cap - for the main performer, this is well known for bassline genre as an individual needs to stand out from the crowd.

2) Technology - this is a huge prop used in many other genres as it is modern e.g. ipod's, games consoles, mobile phones etc.

3) Bed - this is needed for our first and last scene of the main performer in which the narrative will take action.

4) Decks - this will be needed to show the producer of the track in action remixing the song to show realism.

5) Smoke - this is typical of youth to smoke either fags or sheesha.

Other things such as bling and looking like a raver/dancer will be needed to make the video successful and as real as possible.

Advertisement For The Production Of Our Music Video

This is a picture of the advertisement that has been created to put around areas in order to attract people to participate and appear in the music video.

Genre Theory

All genres have key elements from which they are composed. A key element of Bassline is that it has a strong emphasis on bass, the music is often purely instrumental, but the vocal techniques common in other styles of garage can also be present, such as female R&B vocals sped up to match the faster tempo.

All genres have recognisable protagonists or lead characters. the lead character for a bassline video is usually the lead singer, however, the majority of bassline music is not accompanied by videos, videos have only recently started to be made.

Also the storylines are predictable, many bassline videos are constructed in studio's with bright lighting, with males and females dancing very energetically.

Iconography is crucial to certain genres, these are elements that we recognise immediatly, there are three ain types of icon - objects, background and sometimes stars. The typical iconography for Bassline videos is dancing/ Raving, loud, upbeat music, heavy bass and males and females dancing who are very energetic, fun-loving, drinking, socialising and youth.

Bassline offers pleasure to people who enjoy it and as it has many sub genres, it has started to attract a wider audience, thsi is why it is becoming increasingly popular, making it easily recognisable for instant communication, also the messages that genres communicate, all depend on repetition, repeate viewings of bassline videos enables it to be known and understood by the audience.

Bassline is gaining popularity on the pop charts and allegedly one reason for this is it appeals to both genders, while grime and dubstep gathered a predominantly male following. The increased appeal of bassline may be in part due to the vocal contributions of female artists such as Jodie Aysha. The lyrics of bassline are often focused on love and other issues that may be considered more feminine.

All media product offer pleasure to their target audience, hence, the product sells, the type of enjoyment one recieves from media products varies form product to product, bassline offers enjoyment to ravers and people who enjoy upbeat, fast energetic music, there is also an enjoyment form 'being able to anticipate what will happen next', with bassline videos, audiences cant really expect them to be any different from one another as they are new and up and coming, there isn't many bassline videos and the few there is are very similar, incorporate people dancing in clubs, alot of noise, raving etc, the typical bassline video.

Graeme Burton (2002), highlighted that there is indeed a tight relationship between audience and the industries that manufacture media products, he called this the circle of Reinforcement of Meanings, through this he showed the repitition in production because of audience pleasure, which leads to profit and comercial success which then leads to production repitition.
Certain elemnets are combined together to make a genre recognisable, these elements vary but essentially are each genre has a special code which makes it recognisable, there is a tight relationship between the media industries that manufacture genre products and the audience which consumes it, this is because they are generally good for profits because the audience pays for them consistently, and very well.
Genre also tends to confirm what we believe in and what we want to believe in.

Re opening of Niche Night Club in Sheffield.

This video shows the opening of Niche Night Club in Sheffield, on the 27th November 2009, after being closed down for exactly two years saw a highly successful re-opening.

They show the target audience for bassline music, it shows energetic, fun loving people whom are suited to this type of music.

'Bassline is in a unique situation - on the one hand it could be about to hit the big time, with the mainstream music industry showing an interest.
On the other hand, its reputation for attracting trouble has left it out in the cold with mainstream nightclubs and the police.' Says Niche Club owner Steve Baxendale. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/insideout/content/articles/2007/09/14/yorkslincs_bassline_12_1_feature.shtml)

Representation

Character Types/Role
According to Propp there are eight main characters in a media text:
1. The Hero - this is the protagonist, usually the main character who has an aim.
2. The Villain - the character who's job is to stop the hero fulfilling his aim.
3. The Helper - this is someone who aids the hero, a sidekick to help achieve the mission.
4. The Dispatcher - the character that sends the hero on his way, the boss usually.
5. The Donor - someone who gives the hero something to help them in their mission.
6. The Princess - the focus for the hero (reward).
7. The Father - one who rewards the hero for returning the princess.
8. The False Hero - the traitor.
This Narrative Theory isnt perfect and not all characters fit in the music industry but it has some relevance as to what ideas and messages are given through these character types.

The characters for our music video promo is the producer Ruky but as a convention of the bassline genre he will not take a major part in the video itself. The video represents youth so there will be alot youngsters dancing, grinders, body poppers and ravers. The video will contain youngsters from different ethnic backgrounds from ages as little as 14-20 and will be a mixture of boys and girls. They will be represented as joyful teenagers who are having fun which will relate to the track being played. There might be dialogue in the music video aswell to express reality and the silliness of youth in todays world.
Below is an example of a bassline music video with dialogue to promote youth and fun.

They will be created as stereotypes, physically they will be dancing and acting silly, their speech will mainly be the lyrics of the track and a little of the dialogue and behaviour will show the youth as being together and fun, not rebellious and a pain as society witness's them today. There will be no direct interaction with the audience and the video will represent the youth as 'doing their own thing' and not following demand characteristics. We are going to mediate our own stereotypes of teenagers to show a positive side to them.

The media uses stereotypes to label different types of people, stylem institution etc so they are easily recognisable for the audience.
' The media is not a window on the world, Stuart Hall', this means that people tend to believe what the media produces in front of them in newspapers, television and the internet. We have to look beyond the window to find out the real meaning of the world and what it contains.
' The media is a 'distorting mirror', John Pilger', this goes to show that everything is represented as it shouldnt be and we are led by stereotypes to believe with the majority and we are too humble and naive to go out in the world and look for the truth in things ourselves.

A huge stereotype in todays world is the 'Dumb Blonde'.
Physical Characteristics - include blonde hair, curvy figure, make up and femininity.
Behavioural/Speech Characteristics - include speaking very slowly and they sound unintelligent. They are always confused and moan all the time and are bothered about how they look. They tend to work in salons and do girly jobs and live a girly life.
Cultural Characteristics - mainly from Western - Europe where the idea originated.
Media Stereotypes - Carmel from Hollyoaks, Jessica Simpson and Paris Hilton.

Walter Lippman came up with 4 functions of stereotypes to show the need of them.
1) A short cut - it is an instant recognition of someone and someplace.
2) An ordering process - people are put into categories for recognition.
3) A map of the world - it is how the world goes around.
4) An expression of our values and beliefs (as a society) - what everyone believes to be true and accepts.

Although stereotyping is not the best way of representing people/places/ideas (e.g. they are usually negative, exaggerated, simplified representations that generalise people/groups). However, they are essential in the media particularly in the need of the economy. This is why they are used so often in the media.

Well done Sameena and Ghulam! Sameena you are definately working very hard on this project so far! Ghulam and Rukhsar, you need to be contributing equally in order to achieve a good grade in this project. Rukhsar, you haven't actually contributes anything to this blog so far and this is unacceptable! You need to continue your research and aim to have it complete by next week so that you can get on with planning next week in lessons. You should divide the tasks equally between all three of you - see the worksheet and checklists. You need to be working on this daily at home or during frees.
After genre, I'd like to see some work on record labels, audience research/questionnaires etc. See checklists/me for guidance.

Genre.

Our chosen genre is a hybrid genre of Dance and Bassline Music. We have chosen this genre because it is an "underground" and up-and-coming genre and is easy to experiment with creatively.

Conventions of Dance Music Videos.

Dance music videos are primarily for the purpose of the use within night clubs settings or an environment that is based upon dance.
Dance music is categorized as an ever-evolving genre, with evolving styles and sub-styles. The presence of vocals, live instrumentation vs synthetic instrumentation, and pattern of drum beats also help differentiate genres of dance music. Some genres, such as techno, house, trance, electro, breakbeat, drum and bass are primarily intended to promote dancing. Others, such as IDM, glitch and trip hop, are more experimental and tend to be associated more with listening than dancing.

The conventions of dance music videos are that they are mainly set in studios with clubs settings and locations of such, the performance mainly consists of people raving or dancing creating a very energetic atmosphere, and the use of females dressed very minimal is popular, the use of flashing lights and bright colours is common and they entail fast paced editing and are upbeat, also the vocals are essential to the performance and the use of graphics and green screening is popular.

This is an example of a Dance Music Video, called Ayla Part two.

Conventions of Bassline Music videos.

Bassline is a type of music related to UK garage and has emphasis on bass. The style originated in Sheffield around 2002.
Bassline has been at the centre of controversy in Sheffield due to a police raid on the former bassline club night Niche, after which the club closed down. Police raided the club amidst reports that the scene had been attracting violence, drug use and gang culture. Since it was the most popular bassline night in Sheffield prior to its closure, Niche is sometimes used as an alternative name for the musical genre. Like grime, bassline is still associated with violence, anti-social behaviour and criminal activity.

The video below shows the Niche Club Raid in Sheffield. Through this clip we portray the negitive stereotype of bassline music. However we also see the positves of the music through people who enjoy the music and the negatives through the police.

Bassline remained underground until the release of T2's single 'Heart Broken'.
The video below is T2's 'Heart Broken'.

This is another Bassline video. It is a remix of Dj Ironic's 'So Nice'. Personally i think the extra bass enhanced the vocals and lyrics of the song and the use of bassline made it more appealing to a bigger audience. there is a sence of energy and power in the track which makes it a successful track, having had 83,138 views on youtube proves the popularity of the track and the bassline genre.

According to TOP 40 DOWNLOADS ARCHIVE :: WEEK 49 : 29/11/2009 - 05/12/ 2009 (http://www.theofficialcharts.com/top40_downloads_last.php?week=1&end=29/11/2009%20-%2005/12/2009), Dizzee Rascals track Dirtee Cash came number 39 out of 40, however, this is because bassline is still an up and coming genre.

Institution

What is a Brand?
Branding creates an image that people are able to link to a certain type of product which delivers an image and message that enables them to view the product over and over again. Branding makes the campaign recognizable and more specific to a certain audience, as consumers have so much choice.

Branding occurred as a result of mass production, ' Image based difference had to be manufactured along with the product', (Naomi Klein, No Logo), therefore branding became a necessity.

What creates a Brand?
According to mudvalley.com there are eight elements that create brand identity. Brand identity is the presentation of a product to its consumer.

  • Brand Essence - what the brand means in a sentence.
  • Brand Slogan - often a catchphrase to a logo.
  • Brand Personality - what kind of character does the brand have? Humanises the brand which makes it easier to relate to.
  • Brand Values - what does it stand for/against.
  • Brand Appearance - what does it look like/ sound like/ taste like?
  • Brand Heritage - what kind of tradition does it have?
  • Emotional Benefits - what feelings does it offer consumers?
  • Hard Benefits - it is cheaper, better, does it wash whiter? What 'real' quantifiable benefits does it offer the buyer?
In relation to Mudvalley.com's theory of brand identity our brand consists of the following elements:-
  • Brand Essence? It represents minorities as it is an 'up&coming underground' music and the genre itself is a minority as it is not classed as mainstream music.
  • Brand Slogan? 'Bring On The Bass'.
  • Brand Personality? It is fast paced, upbeat and something to rave to and for everyone to enjoy.
  • Brand Values? It is a representation of many things including Love, Youth, Pride of Hometowns and much more.
  • Brand Appearance? As it is an auditorial product it has no visual appearance however the music is shared between Mc, Instrumental and Vocals (Singing).
  • Brand Heritage? It is a mixture of all traditions and cultures but the genre originated in the early 2000s.
  • Emotional Benefits? It offers a release from worldly affairs and gets you in a hype as it is highly energetic and the beat is forceful.
  • Hard Benefits? It is cheaper because there is no manufacturer costs, printing and publishing costs as albums are made on request. The 'real' quantifiable benefits to the consumer are that it is easily accessible and is cheaper to purchase as it is not sold at a music store.
Examples of Brand image/identity

The single 'Adagio for strings' proved to be a huge success in the dance charts getting in the Top 40. This particular concert music video was host to a DJ Tiesto concert with a capacity of 25,000 people showing the massive audience for the dance genre. The brand identity and image given is that Tiesto is a confident performer and his aim is to get everyone raving and dancing which he succeeds in doing.
It is not only the videos that bring out the artists brand image but also merchandise and album covers. Below is the album cover with the track above in the 2004 album 'Just Be'.

The media text is produced by 'Speedy Dubz' which is an independent label. They promote and create music individually to tailor everyones needs. This is an example of their work which can be found on youtube and myspace.

These are a few of the artists that work with Speedy Dubz to be successful:-
Ruky
Skanka Productionz
DJ Phelan
Shaun Jnr
DJ Zee-One
TRZ
DJ Jay Vibez

The typical traits of this insitution and its collaborators are that they are mainly young people who have a love for music production and interest of the genre as a whole. Bassline music is produced by independent labels and is fairly new as 'Niche' was brought back on the 27th November 2009 in Sheffield. The genre as a whole has had no major label success but may do in the coming future.

There are many different names for bassline, it can be called niche adapted from the nightclub from which it originated. However, there are many divisions in the genre which are:-
1) Organ House

2) 4x4

3) Bangaz

As different sub-styles have developed people have had a liking for various flavours of the genre and it targets a wider audience. It promotes youth as DJ's are as young as 14 years of age! It also promotes relationships and fun within the genre.

Our Group and Brief

Our group consists of Ghulam Arif, Sameena Waheed and Rukhsar Hussain. We have decided to work on the Music Promotion brief which is made up of one main task and two ancillary tasks which are the following: the main task being a production of a music video and the ancillary tasks being the digipak which consists of an album cover of its release and a magazine advertisement for artist promotion.

Our chosen genre is hybridity between Dance and Bassline. We have chosen this genre because an "underground" and up-and-coming genre and is easy to experiment with creatively.
