Genre Theory

All genres have key elements from which they are composed. A key element of Bassline is that it has a strong emphasis on bass, the music is often purely instrumental, but the vocal techniques common in other styles of garage can also be present, such as female R&B vocals sped up to match the faster tempo.

All genres have recognisable protagonists or lead characters. the lead character for a bassline video is usually the lead singer, however, the majority of bassline music is not accompanied by videos, videos have only recently started to be made.

Also the storylines are predictable, many bassline videos are constructed in studio's with bright lighting, with males and females dancing very energetically.

Iconography is crucial to certain genres, these are elements that we recognise immediatly, there are three ain types of icon - objects, background and sometimes stars. The typical iconography for Bassline videos is dancing/ Raving, loud, upbeat music, heavy bass and males and females dancing who are very energetic, fun-loving, drinking, socialising and youth.

Bassline offers pleasure to people who enjoy it and as it has many sub genres, it has started to attract a wider audience, thsi is why it is becoming increasingly popular, making it easily recognisable for instant communication, also the messages that genres communicate, all depend on repetition, repeate viewings of bassline videos enables it to be known and understood by the audience.

Bassline is gaining popularity on the pop charts and allegedly one reason for this is it appeals to both genders, while grime and dubstep gathered a predominantly male following. The increased appeal of bassline may be in part due to the vocal contributions of female artists such as Jodie Aysha. The lyrics of bassline are often focused on love and other issues that may be considered more feminine.

All media product offer pleasure to their target audience, hence, the product sells, the type of enjoyment one recieves from media products varies form product to product, bassline offers enjoyment to ravers and people who enjoy upbeat, fast energetic music, there is also an enjoyment form 'being able to anticipate what will happen next', with bassline videos, audiences cant really expect them to be any different from one another as they are new and up and coming, there isn't many bassline videos and the few there is are very similar, incorporate people dancing in clubs, alot of noise, raving etc, the typical bassline video.

Graeme Burton (2002), highlighted that there is indeed a tight relationship between audience and the industries that manufacture media products, he called this the circle of Reinforcement of Meanings, through this he showed the repitition in production because of audience pleasure, which leads to profit and comercial success which then leads to production repitition.
Certain elemnets are combined together to make a genre recognisable, these elements vary but essentially are each genre has a special code which makes it recognisable, there is a tight relationship between the media industries that manufacture genre products and the audience which consumes it, this is because they are generally good for profits because the audience pays for them consistently, and very well.
Genre also tends to confirm what we believe in and what we want to believe in.
